Located to the east of the Indonesian archipelago, Sumatra is the sixth largest island in the world and a very substantial part of global production of cinnamon is concentrated in it. With the aim of fostering sustainable cultivation and fair trade for the highly appreciated spice, the Cassia Co-op Training Center has been built on this island of Jambi province, with views of Lake Kerinci. The center is part of a social program of the company Cassia Co-op, which serves as a bridge between farmers and the final buyers, and it seeks to promote research and development of cinnamon products while improving labor conditions, access to education and health care for growers and workers. Held up by Y-shaped pillars, a large roof of cinnamon wood protects five separate constructions raised with brick and concrete, among them a small laboratory, classrooms, offices and a kitchen. Though rarely used in the area as building material, wood from cinnamon trees has also gone into the delicate details of the doors and windows. Raised in only three months in one of the regions of the planet most affected by seismic activity, and with the additional achievement of being entirely climatized with passive methods, the training center with its 600 square meters of floor space has survived several earthquakes measuring up to 5 on the Richter scale.
