Public library in Sint-Martens-Latem

OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen

The new municipal library of Sint-Martens-Latem, in the Belgian province of East Flanders, presents a saddle-shaped roof delimited by a circular perimeter that makes it cut a distinctive figure in the village center. The Brussels firm OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen has designed a large inhabitable space conducive to encounters and exchange among members of the community.

The rounded perimeter determines the definitive geometry of the premises and forms the main space of the library while accommodating the shelves and holding up the roof structure. A large square figure forms the multipurpose hall and the reading garden.

The building is the first of a group of public facilities programmed to go up in a sequence stretching from the heart of town, along the road, and into the new municipal center.
