Adams Street Library in Brooklyn

WORKac

In the Dumbo neighborhood of the borough of Brooklyn, New York, right by the Manhattan Bridge, a 1901 industrial building has been turned into a library by the firm WORKac, led by Amale Andraos and Dan Wood. In a dialogue between old and new, the original wooden ceiling is visible through curved apertures, also showing the perimetral brick walls.

The library is designed as a series of open spaces surrounding a porous pavilion that houses a raised zone for children, who benefit from views of Manhattan, the East River, and Brooklyn Bridge Park. It is clad in MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) panels that present large curvilinear cuts.
