Astoria Cultural Center in Málaga

Barozzi Veiga

The firm led by Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga won the competition to build the Astoria Cultural Center in the historical core of Málaga. It will go up at Plaza de la Merced, on the site of the old Astoria y Victoria cinemas, integrating the archaeological remains that will be uncovered by the digging to be carried out when the existing buildings are razed.

Featuring a multipurpose hall, spaces for conferences, and a choreography center, the project seeks to fit into a complex formed by heritage pieces, respecting the height of neighboring buildings, while defining a new urban architecture, with a character and identity of its own, that opens outward through terraces and expands the ground level toward the square.

The foyer is on the south side of the plot and is configured as a vertical scenographic space flooded by light shining from above and opening to the archaeological excavations on the lower level. The main hall consists of two levels, both with retractable seating, which gives a high degree of flexibility.
