Extension of La Horra winery in Burgos

Carme Pinós

Construction work on the extension of the Bodegas La Horra facilities, in the Ribera del Duero comarca of Burgos province, has begun. Integrated between hills crowned by pines, marjorams, lavender, and rockroses, the half-buried new winery boasts a passive ventilation system and high-energy efficiency, harnessing geothermal energy as it spill out southward with long strata, ramps, and overlooks, which harbor areas for production and barrel aging, for offices, and for direct sales.. The existing warehouses will serve as a logistics center for labeling and storage.

The new building is characterized by a curving concrete plane, the roof, which can take vegetation and come across as a continuation of the rural landscape. The project presents two types of air shafts, which close and open by means of hatches to regulate ventilation, air renewal, or drying at every step of the winemaking process. The interior spaces combine exposed concrete, using reeded formwork, with frames and claddings of Viroc board, wood-chip panels, and mass-colored cement. Completion of the works is scheduled for 2025.
