Following the current strategy of recovering industrial architecture to harbor cultural buildings, the Área de las Artes del Ayuntamiento de Madrid (arts department of the Madrid City Council), called a competition in 2005 to renovate the old Serrería Belga (Belgian Sawmill), converting it into the center for creation Intermediae Prado. The industrial building, consisting of three warehouses, designed more than eighty years ago by Manuel Álvarez Naya, is one of the first examples in Spain of a structure built with reinforced concrete. The volume will house the activity of Medialab-Prado, a space devoted to the research and dissemination of digital culture, with a varied program including production workshops, seminars, exhibitions and concerts.
