The Basel firm Herzog & de Meuron, in collaboration with Zurich-based Vogt Landscape Architects, has won the competition for the urban development – including apartments, workplaces, and recreational areas – of Hamburg's Grasbrook district.

The project's centerpiece is a big park surrounded by residential zones. The heritage-protected existing constructions close to the docks are preserved and are to serve as a starting point for the redevelopment. The canopy of the Übersee-Zentrum becomes an open space for the new quarter. Tall commercial blocks to the east and south shield the complex against noise pollution. The district center at the Moldauhafen – with its shops and cafés – connects with the Veddel neighborhood via a wide footbridge.

The next steps are to prepare a detailed functional and developmental plan, assign plots, and plan the architecture of the buildings. Construction of the new district is to begin in 2023.
