Miyanomori multi-unit residence in Sapporo

Kengo Kuma

Fifteen homes are stacked on the slope of Mt. Okura, overlooking the city of Sapporo (Hokkaido). The stepped volumes are set apart from one another just enough for all the units to get natural light and ventilation, and also optimal views of the surroundings through large windows and terraces.

The residential complex combines concrete and tree trunks showing their rough barks, which clad the exteriors of the dwellings as well as the retaining walls. Each unit has aluminum eaves that strike a contrast with the wood. A central exterior staircase leads to the apartments. Inside, wood and white surfaces predominate.
