The Riga-based firm Open AD, led by the architect Zane Tetere – Sulce, built the Ziedlejas Spa and Wellness Resort in the Latvian city of Segulda, close to the Gauja National Park. Lodgings and saunas are scattered around, connected by winding paths. The cabins present claddings of core-ten steel, but with glazed fronts that promise fine views of the landscape. Open AD custom-designed the furniture, including foldaway beds and tables rising from the floor, as well as hidden bathrooms. The spa is a contemporary take on traditional saunas. One sauna is excavated with views of a pond, another is built with carbonized wood, and a third one contains a plunge pool.
