An ideas competition was held to build a virtual production center in what was a weapons factory in A Coruña. It is now the Cidade das TIC, a facility for developing information and communication technologies. The winning design – by the firm Díaz y Díaz (Jose Deus, Lucas Díaz, Gustavo Díaz) presented two volumes set 2.35 meters apart: a rectangular building for the virtual recording set and an annex, consisting of two pieces pivoted to form an L, post-production rooms, dressing rooms, and complementary facilities.
Located on a tract of land that presents a 2.5-meter grade difference, the recently inaugurated Coruña Estudio Inmersico (CEI) complex respects the scheme and the existing industrial constructions.
The virtual production set generates immersive environments that accurately recreate scenarios, real and fictitious alike, and integrate physical elements in real time, providing ideal conditions for the production, creation, and post-production of audiovisual content for film, television, and digital media. For this purpose, the building is designed as an airtight box with large spans, preventing light and sound from entering, and built with a prefabricated concrete structure. For its part, the auxiliary building was raised with concrete poured on the site, and both have modular facades composed of prefab pieces. As a whole, an enclosed, sound-proof space for virtual production coexists with a more permeable, luminous one, resulting in visual and functional contrasts.
