Liknon is a new space dedicated to Metaxa, a Greek liquor made since 1888 in the distillery founded by Spyros Metaxas. The center is located in a 100-year-old vineyard on the island of Samos. The Muscat grapevines spread beneath the town of Vourliotes, in a sequence marked by refurbished stone walls, which were raised to tame the slope and form terraces where they could be harvested. The proposal preserves the dominant feature of the terraced valley, carving out a route along the stonewalls and embedding one-story structures throughout the valley.
The Athens-based K-studio sought to tell the story and the production processes of this spirit through the landscape, connecting the exhibition and tasting rooms with stairs and stone paths. Visitors are guided through the vines, and the walk through the site unfolds both under and above ground. The route is segmented into three key points: the first, Topos, is an underground space where through a bespoke glass opening one can see the roots and main body of the plant; the second, Chronos, is a cellar where visitors can taste the evolution of the products over time; and the final stop is Metaxa Bar, with an outside terrace and pergola woven with vines.
