Norman Foster was commissioned to renovate and enlarge the Bodegas Faustino winery in Oyón, in the comarca of Rioja Alavesa. Years after his collaboration with Bodega Portia in Gumiel de Izán (Burgos), which opened in 2010, this project for the Martínez Zabala family was for a new-build visitor center. A lightweight timber structure and a palette of earthy colors make it blend with the landscape. The vaulted, column-free interior makes for a large flexible space, which is lit naturally through a skylight and glass facades. The roof incorporates photovoltaic panels. The surplus energy produced is chaneled to the existing production facilities of the winemaking complex, which in turn have been refurbished through discreet and sustainable interventions that connect the buildings to the surrounding landscape. The main entrance has been relocated to the north so that the vineyards are what visitors first encounter.
