The Rotterdam firm MVRDV has unveiled images of Koolkiel, a mixed-use complex to go up in a former industrial zone of Kiel, capital of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The final design will be worked out with input from the community. The 65,000-square-meter development will combine apartments, a hotel, offices, and commercial units. The project also includes renovating a large building that was raised for storing chains for ships, but used in the 1980s for the printing of Werner comics. Personalizable panels of concrete will clad the building. The rooftop park is meant to foster biodiversity, and solar panels and a collector of river water will keep energy consumption low.
