The firm GAD Line + Studio, which works in close collaboration with the University of Hangzhou, has been tasked to develop this affordable housing development for the rural community of Dongziguan, in China’s Fuyang District. Inspired in the region’s vernacular architecture, the flexible configuration presents groups of dwellings that incorporate courtyards. The facades combine white and gray-toned bricks, alternating openwork surfaces to let air circulate. The reinterpretations of traditional slanting roofs yield asymmetrical lines that give identity and variety to the complex.
