Christian Kerez’s studio, based in Zurich, has designed a thirty-story tower in Zhengzhou, the largest city in the province of Henan, in the center of China. The project by the Swiss team proposes a structure that becomes lighter as it rises to adapt to stress variations. This approach marks a contrast with most projects of this type, where the floor plans are identical in spite of being submitted to very different degrees of stress. A first project, with hundreds of braces along the perimeter, underwent dramatic alterations so as to adapt to the fire prevention regulations in the region, finally taking shape as a building that is held by pairs of leaning pillars...[+]
