Lew Tolstoi School in Berlin

AFF architekten

This bilingual (German-Russian) school was built over twenty years ago in a residential area of Karlshorst, surrounded by small-scale buildings. The enlargement planned by the Berlin firm AFF architekten connects old and new, giving continuity to the complex, with the original school block clearly differentiated. Rising two and three stories, the monochrome facades combine textures and decorative patterns: glazed tiles, matte surfaces, and concrete panels with circular perforations. The students are welcomed by the artist Sven Kalden’s sculpture of the Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman ever to travel to outer space.
