Marià Castelló Architecture

In the port of La Savina, the main gateway into the Balearic island of Formentera, lies a saltwater pond that is part of a natural park. Small fishing boats moor here, and now the place has a municipal sailing school, close to other facilities having to do with water sports. Carried out by the local practice of Marià Castelló, the project encompasses 345 square meters in two volumes: one for classrooms and offices, aligned with Calle de s'Almadrava, and the other containing a workshop and changing rooms, facing Pasaje de Balandra. Where these streets intersect, the building presents a void that serves as main entrance, with an oblique structure providing shade. To the south is a large terrace over a minimal foundation, prefabricated and reversible, that connects the two opaque containers of the program and sticks itself into the pond a few meters in the form of a jetty held up by pilotis.

Essentially natural materials like wood were used for the dry construction, avoiding PVC and other potentially harmful synthetic elements. In this way the enclosures are hygroscopic and permeable to steam, which works in favor of energy efficiency and a healthy interior.
