Francisco Mangado

The Navarrese firm of Francisco Mangado has won the competition for a cultural center-cum library in Legnano, a township in Italy’s Lombardy region, 30 kilometers from Milan. With a gross floor area of 4,120 square meters, the complex rises on the edge of the Falcone Borsellino public park. As a counterpoint to the city, it presents a sequence of spaces that gives users an overall view of the inside despite its being functionally fragmented. Defining the building are its compact form; the divisions formed by connection and service cores, which thus become structural elements; the double height of the space following the entrance, which makes a transversal view possible; and the glass-enclosed courtyards that create a visual continuum.
