Situated in the center of Dilbeek – the unofficial cultural capital of the Flemish-speaking belt of Brussels –, the building faces contrasting situations: to the south, the main town square; to the west, the Westrand Cultural Center; to the north, the forest area of Wolfsputten; and to the east, a compact group of typical suburban homes with pitched roofs.
To take stock of this diversity of surroundings, the building simultaneously adopts various strategies. First, with volume: the new building – which is to be the seat of an Academy of Music, Drama and Dance – is conceived to be a soft transition between the scale of the one-family houses on one hand and the imposing presence of CC Westrand on the other. Second, with form: the large sloping roof reflects those of the traditional dwellings on one side, to then on the other side open up to the CC Westrand itself. Third, with function: a covered public space has been created to give access to the academy. Finally, with iconry: a dynamic facade is conceived as an op-art piece. The passer-by walking towards the trees of the Wolfsputten park perceives a facade with trees, while one going in the opposite direction discerns a sequence of pure colors that combine to evoke the chromatic compositions of Alfons Hoppenbrouwers, architect of the CC Westrand.
