School and Teachers’ Residence, Fass

Toshiko Mori

The New York practice of architect Toshiko Mori was commissioned by the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation and the non-profit organization American Friends of Le Korsa (AFLK) to give the remote Senegalese town of Fass a school that can serve 300 children – aged 5 to 10 – from the region of over 110 villages. Two oval buildings form the complex. In the larger one, classrooms and flex spaces surround a courtyard. The smaller one provides accommodation for teachers. Using local construction skills and materials, perimeter walls vary in height and are perforated for ventilation purposes. The thick thatched pitched roof is an efficient insulator against heat.
