Twenty years ago now, the MoMA in New York – and later the MACBA in Barcelona – hosted a magnificent architecture exhibition titled ‘Light Construction.’ Architects of the caliber of Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, Tschumi, Zumthor, Holl, Ito, Sejima, Piano, Koolhaas, Grimshaw, and Gehry participated with works that attested to the then growing fascination with reformulations of concepts like transparency, permeability, reflection, and lightness, and with this perhaps a return to the discourse of the first half of the 20th century, with Hilberseimer’s “light without shadow.”...
