Street-cleaning service headquarters in Vallecas

The project addressed the operational needs and requirements of a large outdoor space for vehicles of street-cleaning services to park and circulate in. This determined the building’s position within the plot, at the western end of the industrial estate of Madrid’s Vallecas district, with a ring-shaped circulation scheme allowing fluid movement around it.

Though simple, the architectural program accommodates a considerable degree of functional diversity: offices, restaurants, workshops, laundry, and storage rooms are laid out in consecutive bands, forming a continuous silhouette of constant height. The arrangement is clearly expressed both on plan and in section, thanks to a structural solution based on prefabricated elements of reinforced concrete.

With a marked desire to obtain a hybrid between industrial and administrative, the building is thought out as a coherent unit that embraces its public character through a large-scale industrial architecture. This approach has made it possible to give the building the flexibility necessary for it to adapt to the program’s different functional requirements.

One of the project’s most distinctive aspects is the treatment of the envelope. The use of a single facade system with industrialized mini-wave panels results in aesthetic coherence and constructive efficiency. Three different finishes mark the different zones of the building: micro-perforated panels of galvanized steel for the administrative areas, blind panels for the lower level of the industrial zone (including the entrances for vehicles), and polycarbonate panels for the upper part, guaranteeing natural light. Such a strategy substantially reduces the energy consumed for artificial lighting, while maintaining a sober, hermetic exterior image.

The building offers itself as an example of contemporary industrial architecture that pursues organizational clarity, sustainability, and formal coherence.
