Elderly home and day center in Los Llanos de Aridane

The Madrid practice of Francisco Burgos and Ginés Garrido has placed first in the competition to build a residence for seniors in Los Llanos de Aridane, a municipality on the Canarian island of La Palma. The scheme combines interior spaces of different scales and degrees of privacy with landscaped exteriors inspired by the immediate scenery of La Caldera’s southwest slope.

The plot is bordered by Calle Retamar and Camino Los Salados, and the program is organized in eight cubic volumes arranged in twos. Each forms a unit above ground, and the connection in every pair contains communal facilities that can be used separately or jointly. The arrangement of the pieces adapts to the shape and slope of the site, forming a large variety of outdoor spaces linked to one another by walkways.

Both the day facility and the services of the home are placed below street level. The treatment of the topography, with banks along the perimeter and terraces within, ensures natural ventilation for the spaces, which have facades facing gardens and small indoor plazas or garden patios.
