Located at 2,883 meters above sea level, in the Monte Rosa Massif of the Pennine Alps, is this mountain shelter, a fruit of collaboration between the architecture department at ETH Zurich and the SAC (Swiss Alpine Club). It is a unique construction of natural solid timber that has been treated with special digital design and automated fabrication systems. The structure is formed by slabs and lattices whose bars were assembled with precision by machines. Large-size pieces were prepared in the factory, transported by helicopter to the site, and assembled there. A similar process was used for the decoration of the structural pieces, following a pattern inspired by the growth rings of trees. This ornamentation, called ‘digital wood-carvings’ by the architects, consists of sinuous cuts of varying depth that resemble those made by the gouge of an artisan, but are executed here by robotized arms which transfer the digital drawing to the actual built thing.
