Extreme heat is not only endangering the habitat of an infinite number of species, but also altering the very way we use our cities, a problem which disproportionally affects low-income communities. In the spirit of working toward a solution, a modular structure developed by and located on the grounds of Harvard University endeavors to serve simultaneously as a civic landmark where people can congregate comfortably, and as an instigator of biodiversity in the area. Designed as an easy-to-assemble kit, a scaffold frame holds up a vertical garden of native plants with flowers to attract pollinators, which helps to cool the space in combination with an awning of inflatable pillows, some of them backlit and others able to release air when sensors installed in them detect high temperatures.
