Point William, a region on the Canadian Shield, is the location of this house surrounded by water and vegetation which was built and rebuilt following a scheme by the Toronto firm headed by Brigitte Shim and Howard Sutcliffe. A 1980s building that stood on the tip of the peninsula that juts into Lake Muskola was subjected to an intervention that erased portions of the existing structure to reveal a large rock outcropping.
Drawing inspiration from the building tradition of this area of Ontario, the residential project began with architecture, then expanded to include landscape, furniture, lighting, and fittings, carefully exploring designs and materials at multiple scales, from an architectural section to a door handle. The exterior palette of materials combines granite, steel, wood, and bronze in a choreography that creates distinct elevations syncopated to respond to each orientation and program. The result is a rich spatial experience, sculpted by light, that flows between interiors and exteriors which interrelate and overlap, with shapes that fuse in the landscape.
