Like many other urban developments in North America, Mississauga – a city with no history, inhabited by some 700,000 people, and belonging to the metropolitan area of Toronto – looks for its identity and relies on architecture for the purpose. Conceived more as visual references than as machines to live in, these two residential towers are an iconic response to a search for urban character. While their footprint takes into account the intersection of the streets where they are situated, their sculptural and insinuatingly warped volumes mark the new entrance to the city through an easily recognizable symbol. Locals have already dubbed the twin towers ‘Marilyn Monroe’, a feminine reference at odds with the usual phallic references of high-rises. The wiggle of the two skyscrapers – soaring 170 and 150 meters, respectively – does not just pursue the common aspiration to height and prominence over other constructions, but also a desire to give all the apartments the best orientation possible.
