The Museum of San Isodoro de León opens its doors after undergoing a full refurbishment process. The project enhances the historical and artistic importance of the Real Colegiata de San Isidoro de León, an iconic example of European Romanesque style, declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1910.
The intervention carried out by Frade Arquitectos has made it possible to clarify the uses of the monumental complex and enlarge the museum from 1,200 to 3,200 square meters, creating a whole new visitor route which, besides giving a fuller, complete experience of the premises and passing through the Royal Pantheon and Doña Sancha’s Chamber, includes the Renaissance staircase, the fortress wall, and the galleries of the processional cloister, not to mention the archaeological treasures discovered during the revamp, among them the remains of a medieval bell foundry.
This thorough refurbishment of the museum addresses the need to update and modernize the institution through specific strategies for preventive conservation, and the building’s adaptation to current regulations having to do with security and accessibility.
