The German firm of Ole Scheeren has completed this residential skyscraper in the Thai capital. Named MahaNakhon (great metropolis), its 314-meter-tall volume is carved to form a pixelated composition that opens up to the city with an ‘eroded’ spiral crack presenting terraces, balconies, and suspended blocks. Containing 200 apartments and a 150-room hotel besides restaurants and shops in the lower levels, the 77-story tower is crowned by an observation derck offering 360-degree views across Bangkok. It stretches beyond the facade line in a 4.5x17.5-meter cantilevered glass-floored deck. The project includes the design of MahanaKhon Square at the foot of the tower.
