EFFEKT

The result of a collaborative effort of the VELUX Group, the architects at EFFEKT, and the engineers of Artelia, Living Places Copenhagen presents seven real-scale prototypes in the Jernbanebyen neighborhood of the Danish capital. Five open pavilions and two houses demonstrate how, without having to wait for future technology, we can already develop sustainable and affordable buildings with a low carbon footprint.

The first step in the project was to carry out a complete life-cycle assessment, with each material, design, and building technique carefully considered and mapped in terms of their emissions. The concept is based on the idea that homes should be affordable, flexible, scalable, good-quality, and kind to the environment. These models thus accommodate changes and different ways of living, using durable materials and applying low-maintenance solutions. They are thought out to have a long useful life and to impact on the environment only minimally. They are also designed to optimize incoming daylight and natural ventilation. Elements of local building tradition are combined with a contemporary language to create a community that respects the environment.
