Located slightly over ten kilometers from the city of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, in the region of Northwestern India, Amber Fort is a principal tourist attraction that one arrives at riding an elephant up a hill to the top. There the visitor is treated to the majestic beauty of the citadel as well as impressive, breathtaking views of the city and Lake Maotha beyond. In the vicinity is Hathigaon, a new complex that is now home to a hundred elephants and their respective mahouts (the riders and caretakers of the huge beasts, which they live at close quarters with). The project, which is very low-cost, is part of larger plans to rectify the degradation of the environment that has resulted from the exploitation of sand quarries in the zone, using the artificial orography generated by the water reserve – an element of vital importance to the community –, on a desert site that has in turn been regenerated through the planting of native trees. The dwelling units – called thans – have been organized in groups of four in the areas not used for the regeneration of the landscape, and they are arranged around a series of courtyards that serve to expand the 40-square-meter inhabitable units. This system of grouping living units allows creating spaces for collective use and enjoyment, thereby contributing to the gelling of a sense of community among the residents.
