This project is the result of a restricted competition that was convoked in 1991 and won by the Finnish team, the only non-Danish participant, over Henning Larsen, Nielsen Nielsen & Nielsen, Tegnestue Vandkunsten and Lundgaard & Trandberg.

The complex is an international film education center administered by an independent foundation and funded by the Danish Ministry of Culture, the city of Ebeltoft and various private sources. The institution is patronized by various figures of the cinematographic world, among them Lindsay Anderson, Bernardo Bertolucci, Milos Forman, Max von Sydow, Andrej Wadja and Wim Wenders.
