The Opera Park in Copenhagen

In the heart of the densely urbanized historic center of the Danish capital is this island with vegetation distributed in six gardens and a greenhouse representing different parts of the world. Located next to The Royal Danish Opera, in what used to an industrial zone, this new public space is a green counterpoint to the bustling city.

Viewing points, snaking paths, and flower beds with organic shapes interweave the elements of the park, which is as large as three football fields and includes 628 trees, 80,000 herbaceous perennials and bushes, and 40,000 bulb plants, for a total of 223 exotic and local species. Like an opera stage, the park is conceived as a landscape with a foreground, middle ground, and background. The plants and trees are arranged in such a way that their natural heights result in a scenic setting facing the harbor.

With green roofs and curved glazing, the greenhouse pavilion includes a café. A protected pathway on a landscaped bridge leads to the opera house, the roofs of which channel rainwater to underground reservoirs for greenhouse irrigation. The paths are designed with a layer of permeable gravel to absorb excess water.
