Batanes Ecopark in Salvatierra

3ME Arquitectura

Located on the outskirts of the city, on the banks of the Lerma River, this project revitalizes a natural recreational space in Salvatierra, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, and brings out the 17th-century Batanes Bridge in all its glory. This bridge, which marks entry into the Huatzindeo Valley, is in a zone where urban growth has replaced agricultural lands. To transform the area into a public space, the municipal government decided to preserve heritage elements and respect the surrounding landscape.

The accessway became a threshold emerging from the act of consolidating the remains of the old house, while a new concrete structure, which respects the existing vestige, houses the ticket office and a viewing ramp that connects with the park through the retaining walls of stone.

The ecopark is organized in three large platforms descending toward the bridge, forming a space for large-scale outdoor activities. Pathways winding across the place lead to lightweight pavilions providing amenities and recreational activities, executed with local materials like wood and volcanic stone. Light structures of wood apply a double-T beam and column system.

Traditional materials of the region, such as wood and stone, were used to maintain an architectural language that would engage in dialogue with preexisting buildings. In the landscape design, the inclusion of various species of trees and wild grasses, along with the revival of orchards, contributed to preserving the natural environment.
