Ghana will be home to West Africa’s first facility specialized in children’s cancer. Commissioned by the Wish4Life Foundation, this ambitious project aims to transform children’s cancer treatment in the region. Perched on the eastern slope of the Atewa Range, the International Children’s Cancer Research Centre is to occupy a 225,000-square-meter site, and be the first institution in the region to be exclusively devoted to pediatric oncological care.
The ICCRC will not only offer clinical treatment, but also be a hub of advanced research, medical training, and community support. The objective is to increase the rate of survival of children afflicted with cancer in the region, from the current 10% to a level comparable to the 80% registered in countries like the United States.
Designed in accordance with principles of biophilia, the campus is integrated with its natural environs. Drawing inspiration from traditional Ghanian architecture, its buildings use local materials like rammed earth, clay bricks, and wood. Sustainability is key, and the scheme incorporates passive cooling, solar energy, and strategic orientation to minimize its impact on the environment.
The campus features a pediatric hospital, research laboratories, an oncological training institute, accommodations for families and staff, a chapel, and a support center for families. The open-air courtyards are arranged as spots for socializing and reflection, intended for both the emotional and the physical well-being of patients and staff alike.
