Amid an imposing landscape, these pavilions serve as a gateway to the southern part of the Qinling Mountains in Liuba County, China; a threshold between contemporary architecture and nature. Three large inclined roofs protect the functional zones that include a reception hall, public baths, and a store; an invitation to rest and socialize with villagers. Walkways to different altitudes ascend to a viewing point or fork out into several paths up to the mountain. Taking inspiration from constructions of local tradition, the complex uses a palette of materials that combines wood, stone, concrete, and translucent glass, in a play of shadows and colors with different textures.
