The Songtaaba Women’s Association is made up of approximately 300 members from the village of Gando and the surrounding province of Boulgou. The association provides a venue for the local women to form a strong social and economic union, in order to improve quality of life and break the cycle of poverty.
The project seeks to establish a platform for educational campaigns and economic development, and to provide a safe place to store grain and goods. The center lies on a concrete platform elevated by a series of concrete pilotis, keeping the stored goods, which are later sold, safe from water damage and rodents. Steel-reinforced columns and ring beams support the elevated steel trusswork and an overhanging roof of corrugated metal sheet, which favors ventilation and cooling. The floor plan layout consists of two formally differentiated spaces: the rectangular area houses the educational program with a classroom, a meeting room, an office, a kitchen, and a bathroom; while the curved space is for storage. The most unique element of the building is the envelope, built with clay and hand-made pottery that is cast into the walls.
