Located in the southeastern part of Rennes, capital of the Brittany region of western France, this building has the mission of enriching the community life of its neighborhood, amid 1960s housing estates. Envisioned as a new vector for social cohesion, the building strikes a contrast with the architecture around. The project uses a vocabulary that seeks to establish the identity of an autonomous building by means of a unifying platform which includes open galleries, a sign of coming together. The diversity of uses and users is expressed through volumes of different heights, which combine opaque and transparent surfaces, timber and glass, as well as flat and gabled roofs. Shapes, orientations, and apertures vary slightly on each side. The openwork facades create plays of light and shadow, while the wooden brise-soleil screens protect the building while contributing to unifying the complex. The objective of the scheme is to foster interaction between interior and exterior, create visual connections between the various programs of the multipurpose construction through permeability and transparencies, and engage in dialogue with the immediate surroundings.
