La Canaria House in Los Angeles

Selgascano  Diego Cano-Lasso

In Mount Washington, a suburb in the hills of northeast Los Angeles, this house with impressive views of downtown LA adapts to the very steep lot it sits on, which faces southwest, making it necessary to shield the house against strong sunlight. Tubes of recycled aluminum, where the dominant color is canary yellow, clad the house while framing views from a large, 70-square-meter terrace complementing the 170-square-meter interior. The intention is for this ‘wrapper’ to be embraced by nature over time, with bushes, creepers, and trees including ten palms of three varieties poking through the different levels. Elements and materials were carefully designed and selected, combining handmade details with prefabricated pieces to reduce costs.
