Secular chapel in Todos Santos (Baja California Sur)

A circular enclosure, semi-buried in the terrain, fuses symbolically with the landscape of Todos Santos, in the South Baja California Desert. This discreet project, commissioned by Paradero Hotels, harbors a 185-square-meter non-religious ceremony space structured mainly by a concrete ring. The ground is unpaved, the earth left bare, while an open-air roof directly connects with the surroundings and cosmos.

A semi-circular opening gives views of the Laguna mountain range, and the structure is oriented along an east-west axis, letting the movement of the sun reflect the unceasing passage of time and the ever-changing light of the desert.

The entranceway, offset by 45 degrees from the inner axis and accompanied by two ramps, gradually reveals the space to the visitor stepping in, producing a sense of seclusion that adds to the ceremonial nature of the place. The interior, sober and austere, is largely unadorned, save for a polished obsidian mirror modeled after the sacred tezcatl used by pre-Hispanic cultures for rituals of reflection and spiritual divination.
