Bitcoin City in El Salvador
Fernando Romero

President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador has announced plans to create the world’s first Bitcoin City in Conchagua. Designed by Fernando Romero Enterprise, the ambitious development will provide spaces for technology companies dealing with cryptocurrencies and feature residential zones, an airport, and a seaport. This smart city will generate its own energy, harnessed from a nearby volcano. This year El Salvador was the first country to accept bitcoin as legal tender, and in October it began to mine bitcoins using volcanic activity. Aiming to be efficient and sustainable, the city will have a large central square with a museum presenting exhibitions on the history of money, smart buildings incorporating the latest technologies, and a huge stadium equipped to accommodate a variety of events. Construction is to start in 2022.
