From the House to the Foundation

In 1996, David Chipperfield began building a house for himself and his family in Corrubedo, a small fishing village on the northwest coast of Galicia. The volume completes a gap on the main street along the seafront, among heterogeneous buildings. The house is conceived as a series of graceful interlocking volumes that rest on a solid stone base, with all its internal spaces facing the ocean. While the main facade daringly presents a large and deep opening overlooking the landscape, the top floor contains an enclosed rooftop terrace that becomes a small private retreat.
