Concerned about the role of the artist in society and about the need to renew Spanish art, Juan Genovés (Valencia, 1930) has always been strongly engaged in politics. In words of critic Martin Coomer: “Influenced by modern cinema and photography, and adopting some of the tenets of Pop Art, Genovés arrived at an elegant, critical and deeply affecting means of expressing the anxiety and desperation experienced by many under the military dictatorship.” Though the artist’s recent work has a somewhat more playful tone, his social and political message is still current.
