‘Fifteen Stones (Ry?an-ji)’ by Spencer Finch at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion
Ongoing since 1999 is a program of artistic interventions that engage in dialogue with the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona, and the list of those who have participated includes Enric Miralles, SANAA Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa, Andrés Jaque, Ai Weiwei, Jeff Wall, and Antoni Muntadas. The latest is the artist Spencer Finch (1962, New Haven, Connecticut). On view until 21 October, his ‘Fifteen Stones (Ry?an-ji)’ evokes the famous zen garden of the Ry?an-ji Temple in Kyoto. On a surface of white gravel measuring 25 x 10 meters, the exact dimensions of the pavilion’s pond, fifteen stones are arranged in such a way that they cannot all be seen at the same time, whatever the observer’s position. The composition invites reflection and meditation. Its reinterpretation in Barcelona also tries to connect the German master’s way of thinking and working with the philosophical foundations of Japanese culture.
