611 West 56th Street tower in New York

Álvaro Siza

The Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza has completed a residential high-rise at 611 West 56th Street in New York City, his first work in the United States. With a limestone cladding striking a contrast with its neighbors, the slender, 137-meter tower containing 77 luxury apartments is located in Manhattan's Upper West Side, between Riverside Park and Central Park, close to the triangular Via 57 West building by the Danish firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Carried out by the property developers Sumaida + Khurana and LENY, the new skyscraper rises from a wide base and its crown is a 16-meter windowless block. The tower's interiors were designed by the New York firm Gabellini Sheppard Associates.
