The Norwegian firm Snøhetta, in collaboration with the Belgian team Binst Architects, has won the competition to redo the Centre Monnaie/Muntcentrum in Brussels. Among the others shortlisted were 3XN and Schmidt Hammer Lassen.
The cross-shaped, 63-meter-tall 1970s office building rises over a commercial hub. While respecting the original 62,000-square-meter construction, the project redefines the complex, adding apartments and a hotel to the existing uses, integrating it into the urban context, and making it energy-efficient through a new modular facade that incorporates photovoltaic panels and optimizes passive ventilation. Completion of the refurbishment is planned for 2024.
