A scheme drawn up by Albert de Pineda’s Barcelona firm Pinearq – in collaboration with the local office Dico si Tiganas – is the winning entry in the competition to build a hospital specialized in transplants within the heterogeneous historical quarter of the northwestern Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca. With an investment of 85,730,500 euros and an area of 47,000 square meters, the project involves raising a hospital building, designing outdoor spaces, and urbanizing the zone. Seeking to be modular and flexible, two long volumes set perpendicularly to one another break up their facades in order to minimize their visual impact on the place. Skylights and inner courtyards bring in vegetation and natural light, which have a positive effect on patients in recovery.
