New football stadium in Aarhus

Zaha Hadid Architects

The team formed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Sweco, and Tredje Natur has won the competition to build a new football stadium in Aarhus, Denmark. The current stadium, which opened in 1920, does not meet the standards required for it to host first-tier professional and international football matches. The adjacent building, Stadionhallerne, which Axel Høgh-Hansen completed in 1918, will undergo a renovation, preserving its red facades with white adornments.

Embedded in the Marselisborg Forest, the scheme is based on the vertical rhythm of the surrounding trees, which translates into different elements, including the facade's wooden cladding, for which the timber is to come from local certified sustainable sources. Components of the old stadium will be reused, and recycled materials will include steel for the trusses and the aggregates incorporated into the concrete of the columns. The complex is programmed to open in 2026.
