Considered to be one of the most prominent and sought-after Chinese artists of the 20th century, Zhang Daqian was a close friend of Pablo Picasso, whom he met in Paris in 1956. This encounter marked the start of an intense artistic exchange and also inspired the project.

The site is located at the top of Dong Tong Lu, Yuan mountain, west of Xi Lin monastery, and south of the Tuo River. The museum should grow from the existing tea house, refurbished during the process, and a series of pavilions arranged at different levels following the terrain’s contours. The formal development of the project seeks to integrate the cultural essence of the East and West and generate a building able to represent the past and the future at the same time. So, while the motifs of Zhang Daqian’s paintings find their reflection in the laminated bamboo structures that compose the vertical sections of the pavilions, a portrait of Picasso by the Chinese artist inspired the floor plan. This symbiosis pays tribute not only to the friendship between both masters, but also tries to establish a dialogue between the cities where each was born: Neijiang and Málaga, creating a symbolic bridge between their legacies...
