22 November Marketplace in Tuxtla Gutiérrez

rzero estudio

Located in the Patria Nueva neighborhood of the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the 22 November Marketplace project is part of a strategic plan for the urban improvement of what is the capital of the Mexican state of Chiapas. The plan includes other works by rzero studio, such as El Aguaje Park, the 5 May Plaza and Garden, the Central Plaza, and the Patria Nueva Sports Center.

The complex replaces the previous market, which was demolished because it was in such a bad state. Based on a 3.6-meter grid, the scheme takes off from a site analysis to create a program addressing the users’ needs. Under long barrel vaults, the structure of reinforced concrete modularizes the building and delimits the market stalls. Reddish brick walls define the interiors, interspersed with courtyards and multipurpose spaces, and frame the boundaries toward the street.
